Round Two Results
It was an amazing night, at times the number of TV cameras made us feel like we were on the set of a Hollywood movie - Lights Camera Mud and Action…
The Top End Mud Racing Association turned on another great nights entertainment, the rain stayed away and the competition was hard and fast. All eyes were on the PMT team in 2WD Standard as they had Ian Wright (Invite Mr Wright) in the car co-driving with them, sadly his lucky purple sparkly knickers (presented by the girls) did not do the trick and the PMT team took out the number two spot in the back to back finals. A huge congratulations to new comer Peter Jennings who was driving car 15 Coz I Can in his first ever event and took the number one spot on the night. We think he will be back in his own car ver very soon.
Simon Modra handed the keys to his Pro Mod car to daughter Ashlee on the night and Ash showed that she can mix it with the big boys in Pro Mod. Ashlee nearly pulled off the impossible, she came within 1 second of toppling the Boogeyman from his number one spot. Well done Ashlee and watch out Simon (smiles).
Top Gun was alive with action - Ted Roderick and Hyperactive found some new ways to navigate the track that caused the officials to scramble out of the way. At the end of the night it was a high octane win to Darren Diwell in Ogre. We hope to see Gordon Fern and Bad Attitude back on the track next meeting, its not the same with out him. We also hear rumours of some new Top Gun Cars, so make sue you are there in December to see the newbie's.
Tiarne and Mark Tattingham (Niece and Uncle) both took home First places on the night in 4WD Standard and 4WD Modified. Tiarne dad Eddie nearly made it a Tattingham hat trick, but had to settle for the second place prize in 2WD Open, with Jeff Gale getting the first.
We had three new teams competing on the night and we want to say a big welcome to them all and we hope they had as much fun driving as we did watching them. Welcome back to the Mud to the Poulsen family - with Life Time Member Terry and children Christie and Mitchell driving "Just try It".

Top End Mud Racing - October 2011
Mud racing retuned for its 2011-2012 Season with a bang (in more ways than one). A mid event full power loss was not enough to dampen the excitement of the opening night. Many thanks must go to Power and Water who responded to the crisis in double quick time and had full power retuned in less than half an hour. The Mud racing officials are pretty adaptable and racing continued with manual timing and flag starts until the total loss of all lights posed a safety risk for the drivers. So it was a truly exciting and different start to the Season.
Over 30 cars made it out for the first meeting with promises of many more next meeting with a few cars still being in off season pieces. This meeting saw the popular return of the 4WD Standard class. 4WD Standard is a great class for new competitors and is designed to allow drivers to compete with a minimum of expense - you can pretty much bring your road car down and get racing. If you have been sitting on the hill watching and wanting to get involved this is the one for you.
All eyes were on the hotly contended Pro Mod class, could anyone knock the unbeatable Chin brothers and ‘Boogeyman’ off their long time number one spot?... When in the shock of the night the Boogeyman retired injured after the first heat the gates open up to see who would take the number one spot. A battle royal between Simon Modra ‘Brumm’ and TEMRA President Chris Lovewell in ‘Tonka Truck’ kept the crowd entertained right up until the back to back finals when the two faced off for the number one spot. With a win each it was again down to average times to determine the winner. Well done to Chris who took home the 1st Place Blue ribbon. It’s been a while between drinks and it was wonderful to see the pay off of all of the long hours under the hood. Looking forward to next meeting - its gonna be a cracker.
It was a small but determined Top Gun field with arch rivals (and good friends) Gordon Fern ‘Bad attitude’ and Darren Diwell ‘Ogre’ meeting again in the back to back finals. Gordon pushed ‘Bad Attitude’ a little too hard (after setting the best track time of the night in Round One) and a mechanical failure in the first round of the finals handed the win to Darren and ‘Ogre’. The Top Gun class never fails to entertain - and top marks must go to Ted Roderick in ‘Hyperactive’ who provided the roll over of the night in spectacular fashion. Sadly the roll-over put Ted out of the race for the number one spot. Tony Norris and ‘Mudzilla’ put on a great show for the crowd and it looks like Tony has most of the bugs sorted out and is going to be throwing his hat into the mix for the rest of the Season.
TOP GUN 1st - Darren Diwell - Ogre 2nd - Gordon Fern - Bad Attitude 3rd - Tony Norris - Mudzilla Scary is one word to describe Saturday night’s Top Gun action. The new track conditions made for some spectacular action, it was definitely hard to keep the cars straight on the track. Ted Roderick in Hyperactive came to ‘grief’ in Round Two, which sadly put him out of action for the rest of the night. Tony Norris and Mudzilla showed that its not going to be the Darren and Gordon show this Season. Tony set some very competitive times and its going to be an interesting year in Top Gun. Mechanical issue (Bad Attitude) in the Back to Back finals sadly stopped us from seeing Darren and Gordon face off in their usual high octane, seat of your pants competition. Darren Diwell took out the first number one - will he be able to do it in November? That is the question… Darren Diwell
PRO MOD 1st - Chris Lovewell - Tonka Truck 2nd - Simon Modra - Brumm 3rd - Rod Gobell - Dunno This is one of the most popular classes in Mud Racing and it was the one everyone was watching to see if anyone was going to take on the Chin brothers in Boogeyman. With Brother Wes away in WA for work it was all down to Greg Chin to hold off the contenders on the night. But it was not to be when the Boogeyman had a technical failure in the first round that took it out for the rest of the night. This opened up the field and it was anyone’s guess who was going to take the number one. This is a tight competitive field and with the Boogeyman retired hurt all eyes were on the first round to see who was going to be the fastest. At the end of the night TEMRA president Chris Lovewell Tonka Truck qualified fastest with Simon Modra in Brumm only seconds behind. Both drivers gave it everything they had in the two back to back finals and in the end a race went to each driver - The overall first place went to a much deserving Chris in Tonka Truck (I think it was the skill of his talented co-driver 13 year old Mackenzie Stevens that won it for him). It was a great race and bodes well for the rest of the Season. Its going to be very very entertaining. The third place on the night went to Rod Gobell in Dunno. Rod and Vic Martin in Dirty Deeds had a cracking first run in the back to back finals with Rod snatching victory by 0.05 seconds. Lets just say that made for interesting timing in the control hut.
 Chris Lovewell
4WD MODIFIED 1st - Mark Tattingham - Rocky 2nd - Joel Tomes - That Bloody Nissan 3rd - Jarrod and Tyler Donovan - Crash Test Dummies This is one of the most fun classes in Mud Racing and it was a great opening meeting for all of the drivers. The class welcomed long time 2WD Standard class driver Di Evans, driving her new Anger Management car. Di sadly had some mechanical issues and was unable to finish the night but she and husband Bruce will put in some late nights and be back better than ever in November. Long time Mud Racing personality Basil Roe handed the keys of That Bloody Nissan to nephew Joel Tomes for the opening night. Joel showed that he knows what he’s doing and put in a great nights racing to meet Mark Tattingham (Rocky) in the back to back race for the number one spot. Both runs were very close with Mark just (and we mean just) taking the first place. Brothers Jarrod and Tyler Donovan in Crash Test Dummies took the third place. 4WD STANDARD 1st - Tiarne Tattingham - Aquaduck 2nd - Sarah and Laura McArthur - Full Boar This is was the first running of this class in a lot of years and with a small field of three cars we are encouraging all of the spectators who have wanted to Mud Race to go home and get that old 4WD out of the shed and bring it down next meeting. This is a fantastic ‘starter’ class and has been designed for young drivers and new drivers. In the end it was an all girl event with Tiarne Tattingham in AquaDuck meeting Sarah and Laura McArthur Full Boar in the finals. In a close event again both cars took a win each. Congratulations to Tiarne for taking home the first place in the first running of this class. On a fun note - the advantage of this class according to Matty Clark who raced The Machine is that you can race with the windows closed and the aircon running. Complete luxury…. and very kind to the home washing machine too.
2WD OPEN 1st - Brian Buckley - Buckleys 2nd - Jeff Gale - Bentaz 3rd - Eddie Tattingham - SwampRat Well well well . . . Jeff Gale (Bentaz) is the TEMRA Track Coordinator and he may want to remember where he put the deep bog holes after falling into one in the back to back finals. Jeff and best mate Brian Buckley (Buckleys) continued their epic tussle on Saturday night. Brian raced two fantastic races in the finals and deserved his first place ribbon. Jeff had a ‘Revenge will be mine” look on his face, so be there in November to see the next instalment of this ongoing battle. Johno Gosen 4Play and Eddie Tattingham (yes there are a lot of Tattinghams in Mud Racing) SwampRat faced off for the third place and it was Eddie who came out a winner on the night. It was great racing by both drivers. 2WD STANDARD 1st - Sue Abrook, Sarah Featherstone, Jan Diwell - PMT 2nd - Ashley Modra - Coz I Can 3rd - Eddie Tattingham - Bugley I love this class, it is one of the best. The drivers in this field have to face the horror of a track designed to be hard on 4WD’s in their 2WD Standard cars - the Top Guns maybe fast but these drivers have to really ‘drive’ to make it around this track. The track was extra hard on the night and it was amazing any of the 2WD Standard cars made it around but make it they did. It was an all girl back to back final with Ashley Modra in Coz I Can meeting long time rivals Sue, Sarah and Jan in PMT. The PMT girls took a win in both races and were rewarded with the blue ribbon. The boys had to fight it out for third place with Eddie Tattingham driving Bugley and Mal Lelay and Jeff Penney in Muddy States battling it out. Eddie took the first race but sadly fell victim to the mud holes in the second race handing the victory to Mal and Jeff, who drove a great second run.
Make sure you get to Mud Racing in November when TEMRA will host Ian Wright (from Lonely Planet fame) who will be in Darwin filming an episode of his UK Discovery Channel show ‘Invite Mr Wright’ - Ian will be racing with the PMT team and we want to make him welcome in true Top End Style - covered in Mud…
